Alex Yang, Piano Solo
Seventeen-year-old Alex Yang from Halifax, studies at the Halifax Grammar School and the Juilliard Pre-College in New York on weekends. Alex has participated in masterclasses with Angela Hewitt at the Trasimeno Music Festival (Italy), earning praise for his “remarkable clarity and sense of line” (Christopher Axworthy). He has also studied at Orford Musique, CMC Gathering of the Stars, and under a full fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival & School (2025).
Alex has earned top prizes at major competitions, including the 2024 Kaufman and Spotlight International Piano Competitions, Grand Prize at the 51st FCMF and 61st Canadian Music Competition, and Third Prize at the 20th CFMTA National Competition. Named to CBC Music’s “30 Hot Classical Musicians Under 30” (2023), he was also featured on CBC Radio One.
Alex has appeared as soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia and performed in major venues including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Merkin Hall, Koerner Hall, and Italy’s Auditorium Marianum. He has received ongoing support from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust, Debut Atlantic, and LAMP, recently earning the Debut Atlantic Musical Award and the Creative Nova Scotia Leadership Award.
