Roddy Ellias Eastern Trio featuring:

Roddy Ellias, Tom Easley & Mark Adam

Canadian jazz guitarist and composer, Roddy Ellias brings five decades of unique and compelling music to the world. With an eclectic approach that defies simple classification , Roddy has developed an innovative guitar style that intricately melds classical, African and Brazillian musical ideas within a deep tradition of jazz.

His musical journey began at the age of five, when he started improvising on his grandmother’s piano. Decades later, he continues to explore new musical possibilities, developing his unusual composition and playing approach.

From the early days at Uncle Charlie’s Chicken and Ribs Jazz Joint to performing for the Queen of England to creating a unique chamber jazz opera with puppets, Roddy has carved a musical space for himself unlike any other. Along the way, he’s also enjoyed performing with many of the greats, including Lee Konitz, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler, Cleo Laine, Tom Harrell and Nat Adderley.

“Intuition” - Chamber Music Series

Katherine Yoon (violin), Yeh-Chun Lin (percussion), Macintyre Taback (cello), Lindsay McIntyre (percussion), & Anna Han, (piano).

There is a saying, “writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” Music has been throughout the years a way to not just tell but relive together the most intense of human experiences. As one lives, one collects - sights, emotions, wisdom, instincts, memories, strength, imagination, capabilities - and this pot of humanness defines who one is and what one can offer. In a world where whole lives are easily reduced to numbers of meaningless size it is a gift and a necessity to zoom in on the individual moments of living. Each piece on this program reveals a depth of vulnerable existence and interpersonal influence, as will each performer in their heartfelt collaborations with each other.

“Last(ing) Words” - Chamber Music Series

Jason Moon and Clara Neubauer, violin; Yeh-Chun Lin, viola,; Leland Ko, cello; Lindsay McIntyre, soprano; Anna Han, piano

From Perkinson’s String Trio, written on his deathbed, to Klein’s String Trio, completed nine days before his deportation to Auschwitz, the pieces on this program are in conversation with death. Mortality is the inescapable deadline which impels all events and actions; without mortality there would be no urgency. Although death only retroactively structures a person’s life narrative, with only those left behind fully understanding the context of each moment within the deceased's lives, works like Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 132 seem uncannily in tune with the composer’s personal timeline. Can we, on some spiritual level, clock our physical battery? What role does fate have in our psyche?

- Anna Han

JOHN TAVENER:  Akhmatova Songs (1993), for cello and soprano
JOSEPH ACHRON: Hebrew Melody
COLERIDGE-TAYLOR PERKINSON: Movement for String Trio

“Elsewhere” - Chamber Music Series

Leland Ko (cello) & Adria Ye (piano)

The British composer Thomas Adés once wrote, “I don’t know why it is that the cello of all instruments makes one dream of ‘Elsewhere’ when one hears it… Perhaps because the colors are so rich and wide-ranging, one can dream and find oneself in a different place.” The collection of works on this program capitalizes on this idea: from the dreaminess of Nadia Boulanger, the restlessness of Robert Schumann, and the exuberance of Felix Mendelssohn to the private world of Gabriel Fauré and the downright mythology of Olivier Messiaen, these pieces (and the sounds they demand of the cello and piano) are an invitation to be transported or to engage in escapism. But then, of course, perhaps all music is…

- Leland Ko

Three pieces for cello and piano: NADIA BOULANGER
FAE Intermezzo: ROBERT SCHUMANN
Cello Sonata No.1: FELIX MENDELSSOHN

Solo Residency Concert: Lindsay McIntyre, Soprano

Lindsay McIntyre is a Canadian vocal artist whose work lies at the intersection of technical precision and the magic of mindful experience. Awed by the natural world, Lindsay believes music making is a form of transfiguration: creating moments out of thin air. A scholar of the voice, body, and meditative practices, She is particularly passionate about using her instrument as a vessel for contemporary music.

Soprano Lindsay McIntyre presents an exploration of the raw human voice through this program of unaccompanied vocal repertoire. Although voice is an extremely common instrument, it is seldom heard alone in concert settings. This interwoven set of pieces will feature works by R. Murray Schafer, Luciano Berio, Rebecca Saunders, and newly composed transitions by the singer, and will highlight many of the beautiful, funny, disconcerting, and poignant sounds a voice can make.

As part of their Fischoff Gold Medal and Grand prizes, Poiesis embarked on a tour of both the Midwestern U.S. and Emilia Romagna, Italy. In the 2023-24 season, Poiesis made their debuts on series including the Schneider Concerts in New York City, the Kent Blossom Music Festival, and the Faculty Chamber Series at Baldwin Wallace University. Comprised of violinists Sarah Ma (22) and Max Ball (22), cellist Drew Dansby (24), and violist Jasper de Boor (23), members of the Poiesis Quartet have attended programs such as Kneisel Hall, the Perlman Music Program, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival, and Madeline Island Chamber Music’s Fellowship program.

The Poiesis are a group of interdisciplinary musicians: In addition to their performance degrees from Oberlin, Drew also received a B.A. in Chemistry; and Sarah holds two minors in Comparative American Studies and Gender, Sexuality, & Feminist Studies; Jasper graduated as a double major in viola and violin performance with a minor in baroque violin; and Max pursued a minor in jazz studies. When not playing chamber music, Poiesis loves to learn new languages on Duolingo, share delicious ice cream cakes, and take long walks on the beach. The name Poiesis is derived from the ancient Greek word ποιεῖν, which means "to make"; particularly, to create something that has never been made before.  As a string quartet made up of inter- and multi-disciplinary young artists, the Poiesis Quartet seeks to program music of all styles and genres and expand the traditional quartet setting with an emphasis on platforming works by emerging and underrepresented composers. Poiesis strives to create unique moments of synchronicity, sensitivity, and verve in each performance.
