Winter Film Series: Celestial Queer

It’s movie day at LAMP! Join us for an afternoon showing of Celestial Queer: The Life, Work and Wonder of James MacSwain.

Winner of the Best Atlantic Feature Documentary Award at the Atlantic International Film Festival in 2023, Celestial Queer is a 72 minute film celebrating James MacSwain, Nova Scotia's beloved and iconic queer artist, animator and gay-rights activist.

Martha Cooley, Director of AIFF, says this: "A fittingly eclectic and colourful ode to Halifax treasure, multi-media artist James MacSwain." Celestial Queer documents MacSwain’s journey growing up gay in the ‘50s and ‘60s in small-town Nova Scotia and finding his community and artistic practice. Co-directors and long-time-Jim-disciples Eryn Foster and Sue Johnson compiled footage for this epic documentary for close to a decade to tell the story of this quietly outspoken artist and activist.

Entrance: $10/Pay What You Can

LAMP is proud to be a part of the Lunenburg Foundation for the Arts’ annual Winter Film Series, also in partnership with incredible local organization and fellow arts-supporter Lunenburg Doc Fest.
